Just when I thought I had tried every rice crispy treat recipe under the sun….this recipe shows up on StumbleUpon.
I may or may not have immediately run to the store to by a cake mix to make it.
And…had a little too much fun playing with those gorgeous, colorful sprinkles.
And…enjoyed every single, glorious, hint-of-cake-batter-flavored bite.
And…shared the rest with friends so that I didn’t eat too many bites.
And…now I share it with all of you.
And…you should make some.
:)

Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats

Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp. butter
- 1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows
- 1/2 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)
- 5 cups crispy rice cereal
- 1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, then remove from heat. Whisk in the (dry) cake mix, then stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and briefly stir. (Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out their color.) Press the mixture into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them cleanly.
- *Disclaimer: You consume dry cake mix at your own risk.*
Notes

Love the flavor of these, but they turned out rock hard. Very difficult for the kids to eat once cooled. I did up a 1/3 cut of cake mix. Any suggestions to soften them so they don’t get so hard? More butter or maybe less rice crispies? I welcome any comments.
Just made these and the kids loved them! Easy tip when spreading out the treats-put a ziploc bag over your hand, spray with cooking spray and press treats into pan. A lot easier than a spatula :) ENJOY!
I just made these and saying they were hard is a understatement !! So bummed. Have no idea what happened ?
These look SOOOOO delicious!!! I’ll have to make them
I wonder how they would be with plain or chocolate crisp rice cereal and chocolate cake mix? Hmmmmm
Being a chocolate lover, how about choc marshmallows, cocoa crispies, dark choc cake mix, and choc sprinkles and/or those tiny pastel disks?
It looks delicious! Anyone knows if it’s possible to change the butter with oil in order to make them milk and gluten free?
These are great!! My mom even liked them and she has been making rice kris pie treats for years. nice alternative to the usual.
I used a 16 oz bag of marshmallows, 7 TB butter, 1/2 c cake batter, and the entire 12 oz box of Rice Krispies. patted into a lg 11×17 lasagna pan. Yum Yum. thanks for the original recipe!!
Just made these! Can’t wait to try!! My question is- I tried using your cake ball recipe but after I measured and baked everything, they’re more like fluffy half burnt flat cake cookies. Should I have used more cake mix? I still have a good amount of cake mix left, so I’d love to know how to make the cake balls the proper way! Thanks!
