Just when I thought I had tried every rice crispy treat recipe under the sun….this recipe shows up on StumbleUpon.
I may or may not have immediately run to the store to by a cake mix to make it.
And…had a little too much fun playing with those gorgeous, colorful sprinkles.
And…enjoyed every single, glorious, hint-of-cake-batter-flavored bite.
And…shared the rest with friends so that I didn’t eat too many bites.
And…now I share it with all of you.
And…you should make some.
:)

Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats

Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp. butter
- 1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows
- 1/2 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)
- 5 cups crispy rice cereal
- 1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, then remove from heat. Whisk in the (dry) cake mix, then stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and briefly stir. (Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out their color.) Press the mixture into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them cleanly.
- *Disclaimer: You consume dry cake mix at your own risk.*
Notes

Made these today. I used 1/3c. Jiffy yellow dry cake mix, mixed into the marshmallow while still on the stove, mixed in smoothly. Intead of immediately mixing in sprinkles I waited a little bit to let the mixture cool and threw in the sprinkles to incorperate as I was patting the mixture into the pan. This helped the sprinkles colors to not run. Topped off the whole thing w more sprinkles and patted down the mixture w wax paper. I didn’t taste much if the cake batter flavor from my use of 1/3c Jiffy yellow cake mix so will try another brand, like BC or Hines next time. All in all it was a fun recipe
I tried using Jiffy too because there would not be as much wasted cake mix but I couldn’t taste the cake mix at all. What a complete disappointment. I blame Jiffy though not the recipe. I need to try this again
Just pinned this and love that you include a use for the leftover cake mix, however I plan on making enough crispy treats that there will be no leftovers. :)
you can use a jiffy brand yellow cake mix- it’s just the right amount and you don’t have to figure out what to do with the rest of a regular cake mix!
I made these tonight and they were good. Guessed on the cookies though because I couldn’t find a conversion chart for ounces to cups. Does anyone know what the actual amount of cake mix, in cups, is for the cookies?
3/4 cup.
:)
6 oz. = 3/4 of a cup. Most measuring cups have oz. and cups on them. You could also google measurements in the future.
these were amazing!! thank you for sharing this recipe! <3 i will alwaysmake these instead of regular rice crispy's(:
Did them according to the usual instructions for rice crispies treats. Only difference from yours is to make sure you remove the melted marshmallows from the heat before adding the rice!! You don’t want to heat the rice up to much, or it will cook and they will turn out hard! The sprinkles went on the top and were pressed into the treats when I was pressing them into the pan (instead of in the pan). They turned out awesome!! What a great idea!! I want to try it with other cake mixes!
Also, I dipped half of each treat in the Dolci Frutta chocolate, then put some sprinkles on the chocolate. It can be done with real chocolate chips, but the melting fruit for chocolate (white or regular) is MUCH easier and tastes great!!
Made these twice! They are the best rice crispy treat recipe EVER!! I used 1/3 cup cake mix and put the left over in the freezer so I will have it on hand. Don’t think there is a problem putting cake mix in the freezer…?
I made these and they were so good they were gone in 1 day at my house lol …making the left over cake mix into the cake mix cookies now :) ! Thank u for sharing !
So I have about 16 oz of cake mix leftover. Does anyone know how much oil, water and egg I should add to make cupcakes with the leftover??
I must be honest, I was really excited to make these! I made them and they turned out fine at first, but by the time they were served, they were as hard as a rock :( awful and embarrassing!
Honestly, I think the 6 cups of rice krispies is too much and I think the directions need to be clearer about turning off the heat once the marshmallows are melted (before the krispies are added). I don’t think I’ll be trying them again, but the idea sounds good in theory if you can correctly master the art of making these treats :)
Thanks!
Someone commented above that the problem is if you don’t put the saucepan off the heat before adding the krispies they will turn hard.
Actually the recipe calls for only 5 cups of cereal..maybe that’s why yours didn’t turn out?
Try cooking the marshmallows on a lower temperature. The slower you cook the marshmallows the softer they will turn out. I have actually learned that if you put the marshmallows and butter in the microwave for 2 min. they will turn out super soft every time.
