Just when I thought I had tried every rice crispy treat recipe under the sun….this recipe shows up on StumbleUpon.

I may or may not have immediately run to the store to by a cake mix to make it.

And…had a little too much fun playing with those gorgeous, colorful sprinkles.

And…enjoyed every single, glorious, hint-of-cake-batter-flavored bite.

And…shared the rest with friends so that I didn’t eat too many bites.

And…now I share it with all of you.

And…you should make some.

:)

You will love this bright and colorful cake batter rice crispy treats recipe! Great for special occasions!

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)
  • 5 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, then remove from heat. Whisk in the (dry) cake mix, then stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and briefly stir. (Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out their color.) Press the mixture into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them cleanly.
  • *Disclaimer: You consume dry cake mix at your own risk.*

If you guys don’t know how to not make a mess, put wax paper underneath and have it over lap on the sides. After you put mixture into pan, fold over the wax paper and press it down. You never have to get your hands dirty.

Also, I’m a vegetarian and use marshmallow cream instead of regular marshmallows, the cake batter actually firmed up my krispies better, so that’s a nice bonus.
Try making Rice Krispies with marshmallow cream! I bet it’s like Rice Krispie treat cereal if you put it in a bowl with milk!

    1. Jodi says:

How much marshmallow crème did you use?

I just made this today and followed the recipe exactly as above. They tasted NOTHING like cake batter. It definitely needs way more than 1/3 cup of cake mix. They taste just like regular rice krispie treats only with sprinkles. Next time I will try at least 1/2 cup of cake mix. Mine turned out exactly as pictured above and I did not remove from heat when I added the rice krispies. You just have to stir quickly and keep stirring. I’m really disappointed in the flavor though, but I will still eat them. Can’t wait to try them again and add more cake mix!

same here… made these for Easter with cute pastel sprinkles & my family was disappointed in them because they wanted to taste the cake mix and didn’t! They were still good though, just nothing to WOW over =/ I was also wondering should the mix be increased to 1/2cup or even to 1cup

I just made these tonight…. they tasted pretty good. But my sprinkles melted some into the rice krispies and tinted / smeared the rice krispies. Is there a way around that to make them look like the picture above?

  4. Mimi says:

I didn’t realize I should have removed from heat when adding the Rice Krispies so they dried up and my finished product turned out pretty rock hard. :-(

Still tasted great and we finished the pan! But next time I’ll know better.

I just made this for the first time and it is amazing BUT as I’m sure my children will request it again I need some help. How do I get the mixture in the baking pan (and make it look lovely) with out making a mess. I had sticky mixture EVERYWHERE….. But not much staying in the pan. Help!!!

    1. Christina says:

Caroline, I find that what works best is to use a large spoon or spatula to get the mixture into the baking pan, and then slather your hands with butter and use your hands to spread and pat the mixture evenly into the pan. Continue adding butter to your hands as needed :)

Rice krispies are not my thing; however my fiancée loves them so I thought I would make it for him and my daughter. BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE…. He alone has eaten the entire pan. HE LOVES THEM!! Like other users I tried 1/3 cup of strawberry cake mix and according to him, “these are the best rice krispies treats he’s ever had”. Clearly I have to make these again because he won’t stop talking about them. Although I I love that he enjoys them, he better fit into his wedding tux come May. lol

My tip: Make sure you wait a minute or two before adding the sprinkles. I did not have an issue with them melting. I used pink, white and red sprinkles. Also make sure you take the pot off the burner before adding the krispies.

Left over cake mix? No problem. Just mix in a dry angel food cake mix and bake 3-2-1 individual cakes whenever your sweet tooth acts up.

    3-2-1 Cake

    1 angel food cake mix
1 any other kind of cake mix

Mix dry cake mixes together in gallon zip lock bag. When you want a quick dessert…this is it.

Place 3 TBLS dry cake mix in a cup, mug, pudding cup, etc.

Place 2 TBLS water in with it and stir completely.

Place in microwave on high for 1 minute.

Let cool, then top with cool whip, icing, or whatever you have on hand.

Keep in cupboard or fridge or freezer…doesn’t matter. Sweets at your fingertips in 3-2-1!

***One of the cake mixes MUST be Angel Food***
I like to make mine with Strawberry cake mix, then top with cool whip and a strawberry. Yummmmm! (Y)

Ok I know it sounds crazy but I never made rice crispy treats before so I was really excited to make these today. Then after reading several reviews I knew I’d screw them up for sure. I went with it anyway and they turned out great!! I took my time melting the butter and mellows on low heat then added cake mix. I took it off the heat when adding the crispys and put in the sprinkles. Looks just like the pic! I used 4Tbsp. butter and 4 1/2 cup rice crispys and little over 1/2 cake mix.
