Homemade Magic Shell

This homemade magic shell is fast and easy, and will bring out your inner kid!
Ingredients
- 1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
Instructions
- Melt the chocolate. Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
- Serve. Serve over ice cream and enjoy!
Notes
Microwave method: Alternately, you can combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring the mixture thoroughly during each pause, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.

So glad your friends are safe! Love this magic shell, can’t believe I haven’t tried this yet.
I’ve made something similar to this with just chocolate chips and peanut butter…also super yummy!
Yes, my heart is grieving too. You put it so well. We spent Saturday night in the basement, and have been wondering for days why we moved to Kansas. We grew up in tornado alley, but something is just too scary this year.
On a much different note, I like that you’re taking time to savor great moments in a day :)
This looks so delicious- give this kid magic shell anytime!
So heartbreaking to watch the OK coverage. Being from earthquake country, people get so terrified (and they are scary), but hands down, tornadoes freak me out beyond belief. I feel so bad for everyone affected.
I’m so glad your friends are safe – what a terrible situation. I’ve lived in the Northeast my whole life, so I can’t begin to imagine anticipating tornado season.
I love Magic Shell, but there are so many bad-for-you additives that I very rarely buy it. Thanks for the recipe – now you have me craving a giant ice cream sundae! :)
I am with you Ali as I keep feeling so heartbroken for the people of OK – and each story I see on the news is more touching or sad than the one before.
But as I look at your post, I am excited about this Magic Shell recipe as it seems like one I could whip up quickly for my son this summer!!! I can’t wait to try it!!!
If you have a coconut allergy what else can you use?
Hi Beth,
I have heard that you can use any kind of oil — vegetable or canola might be a good place to begin. Let me know how it goes if you try it!

Seriously this looks sooo incredible! I love magic shells! I am addicted to them during the summer.
Watching the coverage of the hurricane has been heart-wrenching. I am so glad to hear that your friends are okay, but feel for your friend Amy as she and her family wait to learn about the state of their house.
As for this magic shell…I am making this for my kids! We used some of the store-bought kind for my son’s birthday ice cream sundae and the flavor left a lot to be desired. Homemade is the way to go!
These reports are just awful and I have already teared up several times today just looking at the photos.
