Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix

Newsflash for ranch lovers! Did you know that it is super duper easy to make delicious ranch seasoning mix homemade?

True story. No need to run to the store for one of those processed packets, or to pick up a jar of your favorite ranch dressing or dip. All of the ingredients are likely sitting right there in your spice cabinet! Just do a little measuring, a little mixing, and you’re ready to make your favorite ranch dressing or dip or whatever other ranch-ness you may love in less than 5 minutes. It is seriously that easy!

The great thing too about homemade ranch seasoning is that it won’t be full of un-pronounceable mystery ingredients. Just your simple herbs and spices, and some optional powdered buttermilk if you’d like (similar to powdered milk).

I love using mine to make skinny Greek yogurt ranch dip, ranch dressing, or I’ll even just use the mix to season some chicken or fries. Delish!!!

Ranch Recipe
Delicious ranch seasoning mix is super easy to make homemade!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried dill
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • optional: 1/3 cup buttermilk powder*

Instructions

  • Whisk all ingredients together until blended. If you want a more finely-ground seasoning mix, you can pulse the mixture in a food processor until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Store in a sealed container for up to 1 year.  (If using the buttermilk powder, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 month.)

Notes

Buttermilk powder: If you would like to make ranch seasoning that is identical to the stuff sold in the packet, you can add buttermilk powder to this recipe.  Otherwise, you can just add fresh buttermilk if you are turning this seasoning into ranch dressing.
Store-bought equivalent: Approximately 3 tablespoons of this mix (made with the buttermilk powder mixed in) equals 1 packet of the store-bought ranch seasoning mix.
To make ranch dressing: Combine 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning mix (including buttermilk powder) + 1/3 cup mayo + 1/3 cup milk, and whisk to combine.

Hi! I made this (along with the Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup) to use tomorrow when I make Crock Pot Ranch Pork Chops. I left out the buttermilk powder and added in a bit of paprika for color. Thanks for posting this! If this crock pot recipe works out (as my sister and everyone else raves it will), I will be making it a lot. And needing both cream of chicken soup and ranch seasoning a lot. I blogged about making both today at my blog and will blog again tomorrow in the post-supper post about the ranch pork chops.

I assume that the dry buttermilk would need to be excluded if the mix is made for someone who is vegan. Yes? If so, do you know of a vegan substitution that can be used? I’m trying to convert a Taco Soup recipe that calls for a package of dry ranch dressing mix.

      Hi Taren,

Eek, I actually don’t know a buttermilk substitute. I would just add in 2 tablespoons of the mix (sans dry buttermilk) and 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast.

AVOCADO!!!! Mash up an avocado and mix in to taste…I omit the powdered buttermilk…I’ve added dehydrated bell peppers to…YUMMO!!! Adding some vinegar would probably make it better too!!!

I was really looking forward to trying this but I was little disappointed, and I think it might just be me. I left out the buttermilk powder because I have no idea where I’d find that. I also used fat free plain greek yogurt and fat free milk. It turned out really watered down, and I think that has something to do with the fat free milk. I think if I had included the buttermilk powder, it would have turned out fine. I still have some of the spice mix left, so I think the next time I’ll use fat free sour cream and maybe a splash of milk. And I’ll see if I can find the buttermilk – seeing another commenter say that they found it at Walmart is promising since that’s where we do our grocery shopping.

You can find powdered buttermilk in the aisle that they keep the baking goods and the powdered milk.

where do ya get dry butter milk ?

    1. Ali says:

It’s in the baking section at my grocery store, near the cocoa powder. :)

I found this recipe on Pinterest. This is the best ranch seasing mix I’ve tried. It mixes up in a flash, and the flavor is spot on. I am not a huge dill fan, so I might reduce the dill to 1 tsp., but the longer you let the dressing or dip rest after mixing, the more the flavors meld into the perfect specimen of ranch deliciousness. Thanks for sharing.

Fabulous! Just the other day I was pondering how to make a ranch mix on my own, to use up the last of some sour cream and yogurt I had in the fridge. After making my own taco seasonings and steak rubs at home I just can’t bring myself to buy the packaged seasoning mixes anymore, I don’t like the additives. Thanks for sharing :)

    1. Deb says:

I agree. I make all my rubs etc. and don’t buy mixes any more! This is a blessing, I just add lesser amounts to smaller amounts sour cream because I live alone.

I don’t like having those small packages around and I don’t usually have the right one when I want it or it isn’t enough of it. Thank you so much for posting this.
I made a double batch for Superbowl weekend, where I am making Pull apart bread with cheese and other goodies in the crevices. Then the recipe calls for mixing Ranch dry mix with melted butter and then brush this all over the bread, wrap it in foil, and bake it for 15 minutes. Some add chicken, regular or turkey bacon, veggies +. Could also add it with some organic oil and spread it over the bread. Thanks again. Have pinned it.

When substituting this instead of a Ranch packet, how much should you use of the dry mix. I did use the dried buttermilk, so I’m assuming that’s ok for substituting the packets?

    1. Ali says:

Correct! And 3 tablespoons of the mix = 1 packet.
